June 18, 2022 --
Up early. My wife gets back late tonight and then my sisters fly in to visit the day after. Launched out of bed by the energy of anticipation.
Pack up the horn, the mics. Double check the sheet music.
Take the L train into Manhattan; transfer to the 3, then the 1 to Harlem. A cup of coffee, steaming into the humid air.
On Broadway and 151st, Jasper, John, and Chris are setting up the music room: crank the fan and open the windows before we have to start playing and heating up the room. We play --- it is always easy with old friends.

Eat a sandwich on the long train ride down to Brooklyn; the hands, lips, and mind can rest. Sunset Park, BK is another universe, but the aspirational undercurrent of NYC is no weaker here.

Never met Dierk before; he's Walter's roommate and he has agreed to fill out the quartet -- a nice touch on the Gershwin and the Ellington. Walter's his usual bubbly self and Jake is ready to play but also to laugh and to think. We play --- new friends, new energy.

Jake and I chat over dumplings. It's a tough time to be "one of us" -- the demons of the world spend their time slowing down the forces of creativity: damned dams, evil levies. But we're never alone. There's always another soldier in the fight for the vitality and freshness of music.

Another long train ride: slingshot into Manhattan to get back to North Brooklyn. She lands in just a couple of hours -- do the dishes, a pair of fresh sheets, a shower.

Got it done -- happy birthday Grandma Sandy!
